Off-road armor appeared shortly after WWll vets bought Jeeps and began backcountry exploration. The 4x4 exterior accessory aftermarket soon grew from off-road clubs: Jeepers would make a widget for their own rig, then other enthusiasts would see it and want one. Industry forefathers such as Basil Smith and Pete Condos began by making bumpers for their own Jeeps in their tract home garages.
