XHD Snorkel with Pre-Filter, 3.6L and 3.8L, 07-15 Jeep Wrangler (JK)
- Product Review (submitted on January 24, 2014):
I was one of the first people to get the Rugged Ridge high mount intake and high mount ram air intake in early 2013.
Installation - The instructions for installation were great, however it would have been better to have color photos showing the intake pipe connection to the replacement airbox from the underside of the vehicle. Extending the neck of the airbox for connection to the rubber hose elbow would be a suggestion, as tightening the hose clamp was a challenge. Also the drain valve hanging loose in the fender has fallen off after a few trips through the Florida mudholes. I would suggest significant sanding, etching primer, and body color paint prior to installation. Although noted in the instructions, be careful when drilling/cutting the fender near the antennae mount. There is a double-layer of sheet metal at the antennae mount, that invites drill bits to surge through when drilling the rivets. I( would suggest Rugged Ridge include a new set of airbox spiring-clamps with every kit. Re-using the old clamps has not been sufficient and I now have a racheting tie-down strap holding my airbox closed. Also, I run an alertnate vendors roof rack (sorry pre-existed the RR version) and the windshield hinge mounting tab is not able to be used. I'd like to suggest a snorkel mounting bracket to hose-clamp, or mounting bracket to sliding-adjustable angle pre-drilled.
Usage - I have significantly flogged this configuration with the high-mount ram intake and had good results. Due to vibration & bouncing, the airbox spring-clamps can come loose allowing water/mud to be sucked in. This will shorten your fun for the day. I really do appreciate the design of this system, which allows me to switch from deep mudhole-runner, to uptown roller with just 20 minutes and a trip tot he car wash. I have switched from the shroud to the snorkel pipe over 10 times, and the gaskets are holding up just fine. Using the Rugged Ridge high mount intake and a K&N high flow filter has worked well. For really dusty trails, I'll throw a sock over the ram intake to cut down on dust to the K&N.
Again, my snorkel was early production, if not pre-production, so your experience may vary. Over all i am happy with this product and would suggest it to others.
